The Bangor Humane Society is a nonprofit organization serving over 200 communities in northern and eastern Maine since 1869. We strive to facilitate the human-animal bond by re-homing and rehabilitating homeless pets with humans through pet adoption.
Why The Bangor Humane Society
As the world of animal welfare continues to evolve, we are committed to adapting and changing with it so we can continue to be a vital part of the community in which we operate.

A no-kill shelter, open admission shelter
We are a no-kill shelter. We promote adoption of physically and mentally healthy companion animals and use euthanasia as a last humane option.

Largest shelter in Northern and Eastern Maine
We are the largest shelter in Northern and Eastern Maine, operating for 150 years. We hold ourselves to the highest standards of safety, care and cleanliness and treat all animals and people with respect, dignity and integrity.

Our spay / neuter services are sustainable
Our spay/neuter services have been sustainable for over a decade. We work diligently to end companion animal overpopulation by spaying/neutering every adopted dog, cat and rabbit before going home, distributing spay/neuter vouchers to low-income residents in our community and increasing awareness of spay/neuter program across the region.

We are active in education and outreach
We are active in humane education and outreach. We educate and train caretakers to develop fulfilling and lifelong relationships with their companion animals and raise public awareness with regard to the humane treatment of animals through our programs, advocacy and distribution of informational resources.

Dog's Day Out
This fun program allows members of the public to take a dog out of the shelter for the day! Dogs get some quality one-on-one time, and shelter staff and volunteers learn all about how our dogs do outside of the kennel environment. It's a win-win!
